Established at the end of the 1960s, the cooperative housing movement in Uruguay has been greatly developed over the years. Both new and rehabilitated dwellings have been provided through a system of mutual help and self-management of resources. FUCVAM is the federation of self-help cooperatives and has facilitated the provision of homes for the lowest-income band families in Uruguay, bringing forward many fruitful benefits not found in other forms of tenure.
