Eleven new bioclimatic buildings incorporating 241 flats are being built as part of the REMMA Project. 64 dwellings are completed to date and progress is underway on others. Design is aimed at low energy consumption and low CO2 emissions. Recycled materials are used wherever possible, along with passive and active solar design and SAV windows. A comprehensive energy management system is used to control the various energy inputs. Estimated payback period for the extra costs is 8 years. Estimated savings are 86 per cent in heating costs and 75 per cent in domestic hot water. Funding is provided by EU Thermie at a cost of $6,646 per dwelling.
